The Lord your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you; in his love he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing.”
Zephaniah 3:17 NIV
In Your Midst
According to an April 2022 report from Statistics Canada, in the midst of high job vacancies and historically low unemployment, Canada faces record retirements from an aging labour force. The number of seniors aged 65 and older is growing six times faster than the number of children up to the age of 14. Population aging is not new, but other changes to the age structure are more recent, such as a decrease in the number of very young children due to declining fertility since 2016.
A study of the world’s religions reveals that the gods—who are in reality no gods at all—are distant. Much effort is spent in trying to get their attention and their pleasure. What a contrast to the One true God who is revealed in the person of Jesus Christ. The reason that Advent and the Christmas season are so popular is because it is the celebration of the day God took up residence in the midst of His creation. The prophet Zephaniah looked ahead to the first Christmas when he wrote, in Zephaniah 3:17: “The Lord your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you; in his love he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing.’” After over 2000 Christmases, we can too easily lose the mystery of the incarnation – so let’s take a step back for a minute. There was a day in history, in a real town in Israel – God came to be with us. No wonder we sing “the hopes and fears of all the years, are met in thee tonight.” God came to be in our midst – and He still is.
These have been words from the heart.
