Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away.
1 Corinthians 13:8 (NIV)
Love Never Fails
One of the biggest fails in the history of Canadian business was the Target attempt to enter the Canadian market. The writing was on the wall early. According to Canadian Business magazine, a month before the national grand opening, “The company was having trouble moving products from its cavernous distribution centres and onto store shelves, which would leave Target outlets poorly stocked. The checkout system was glitchy and didn’t process transactions properly. Worse, no one seemed to fully understand how the technology all worked.”
The Bible makes an interesting statement in 1 Corinthians 13:8: “Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away.” How can the Bible say that love never fails? Far too often couples who were once in love fall out of love, family members who once loved each other turn on each other over an incident or a will. We celebrate a marriage that lasts a lifetime because not every one lasts that long. How can the Bible say that love never fails? One of the challenges of the English language is we only have one word for love. Biblical Greek has at least four and the one used here is agape. It is divine love, the love of God. This is the love that never fails. God’s love cannot fail because He is by nature agape. So much else is temporal – even things like prophecy, gifts, knowledge will one day no longer be needed. But the love of God will continue, unabated, for ever and ever. You can cast your care upon Jesus because He loves you – and will forever.
