Words from the Heart for Tuesday August 10th, 2021
But whoever has this world’s goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him?
1 John 3:17 (NKJV)
A Brother in Need
Nearly five million people in Canada – that’s one out of every seven individuals – currently live in poverty. Poverty is a widespread issue across the country and the world, but vulnerable groups such as people living with disabilities, single parents, elderly individuals, youth, and racialized communities are more susceptible. The effects of poverty can be expressed in different aspects of a person’s life, including food security, health, and housing. Over the past 25 years annual national investment in housing has decreased by 46%.
The God we serve is a God of provision. As the old hymn writer said, “For out of His infinite riches in Jesus, He giveth and giveth and giveth again.” His ultimate gift is eternal life, bought at the price of the life of Jesus. But He teaches us to pray for our daily bread, knowing that as He provided daily manna for His people in the wilderness, so He will provide for our daily needs as well. Which is the foundation to what John the apostle says in 1 John 3:17: “But whoever has this world’s goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him?” If we have been on the receiving end of the provision of God for our spiritual and physical needs, and which one of us hasn’t, we are called to emulate our God by being just as generous. It ought to be our daily goal to see how much we can give away. The Lord will provide plenty of opportunities each day to provide for those in need. Keep watching to see who you can serve, and how God provides.
