If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.

James 1:5 NIV

Generous Giving

A helpful article on the www.policyoptions.org website is titled “Canadians are becoming less generous, but all is not lost.” It begins by saying “Canada is facing a growing charity gap – a shortfall between the amount of money that charities are receiving versus their ability to meet the increased demand for their services. For more than three decades, Statistics Canada data has been showing a steady drop in the percentage of Canadians claiming a charitable tax credit on their annual tax return. It is now below one in five Canadian adults who do so. Volunteering is declining similarly.”

In a day when Canadians in general are becoming less generous, it is interesting that those known as religious people are outliers. Followers of Jesus are still known for their generosity. The recent survey states that they need to figure out why people of faith continue to be generous when it comes to charity. It isn’t a secret. We are generous because the God we serve is generous. The Bible tells us that every good and perfect gift comes from Him. When He gives to us, He always gives with overwhelming generosity. Listen to what the Bible says about His willingness to give His wisdom when we request it. James 1:5 says, “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” We so often realize that we don’t have what is necessary to accomplish what the Lord asks us to do. In this case, we need wisdom, but whatever we need, we can count on God’s provision. He is, after all, Yahweh Yireh, the Lord who provides. And He does so generously.

These have been words from the heart.
