But they urged him strongly, “Stay with us, for it is nearly evening; the day is almost over.” So he went in to stay with them.

Luke 24:29 (NIV)

Stay with Us

A castle with turrets on a hill overlooking a mighty river and a quaint old town: it does strike a pose. Little wonder, then, that the Fairmont Le Château Frontenac in Quebec City claims to be the most photographed hotel in the world. The grand railway hotel has borne witness to some notable moments in Canadian politics and pop culture. Even its location is significant: it was built on the site of the 1864 Quebec Conference, where the fathers of Confederation met to create our nation.

At the beginning of Jesus’ life there was no room in the inn. By the end of his life, those who loved Him best didn’t want Him to leave. It seems that this is how it is with Jesus. People either love Him and want Him more than anything else, or they have no room for Him in their lives. Immediately after His resurrection, Jesus came alongside some of the disciples as they traveled on the road to Emmaus. He opened the Scriptures to them, and later they would testify that their hearts were burning within them as He did so. As the day was drawing to a close, Luke 24:29 records, “But they urged him strongly, ‘Stay with us, for it is nearly evening; the day is almost over.’ So, he went in to stay with them.” Jesus always says yes when He is invited to stay. He came for that very purpose. When we reach out to Him in faith and invite Him into our lives, He always stays. He promises that He will never leave us or forsake us. Have you invited Him to stay with you?
