Words from the Heart for Tuesday April 13th, 2021
Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.
Exodus 20:12 (NIV)
Honour Your Parents
On April 17, 2009, the citizenship law changed and many former Canadian citizens reacquired citizenship and others acquired citizenship for the first time. Children born outside Canada to a Canadian parent must now submit an application to obtain a Certificate of Canadian Citizenship to prove they are Canadian citizens. Among other documents, they must provide a copy of a document proving that one or both of the parents was a Canadian citizen when the child was born – a citizenship certificate or Canadian birth certificate.
Parents are a gift from God. They are not perfect and every mom and dad I know would quickly admit that. But most parents do their best to raise their children well. Christian parents’ greatest desire for their children is that they will grow up to walk with the Lord. God has the same desire for children and gives them a command. In Exodus 20:12 we read: “Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.” The apostle Paul tells us that this is the first command with a promise. Does this mean that every child who honours his or her parents will never die young? We know from experience that this isn’t the case. What it does mean is that when a child honours his or her mom and dad, life will be so much easier and more enjoyable. Godly parents counsel their children with Kingdom of God principles, helping them to avoid the guilt and shame of foolish and sinful activities. As children honour their parents by heeding their advice, life will be so much better and more fulfilling. In this way they live a long and enjoyable life.
