Words from the Heart for Thursday September 9th, 2021
These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.
Deuteronomy 6:6-7 (NIV)
On Your Hearts
Back in 2016, Ron McLean of Hockey Night in Canada fame, released a book called Hometown Hockey – Untold Stories from the Heart of Canada. According to Amazon.ca: “These are stories you’ve never heard before. From London to Castlegar, Yellowknife to St. Catharines, Medicine Hat to Montreal, from Bantam to Junior B to the NHL, our country is full of great characters: players, coaches, hockey moms and hockey dads; rivalries, practical jokes, careers that grew out of nothing and ‘can’t lose’ prospects who flamed out too soon; spectacular triumphs, heart-breaking tragedies and tales of friendship, betrayal, love and loyalty.”
We take to heart those things that are important to us. Who and what we have in our hearts are what drive us to live the way we do. The people we love, for example, are in our hearts, and that drives us to live a life of commitment to them. When the Lord gave the law to His people, early in the history of Israel, He called His people to not just give lip service to how He was calling them to live, but to keep His law in their hearts. Deuteronomy 6:6-7 says, “These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.” As the chosen people of God, they were called to represent Him in all they did. Their conversation at home and in public, was to focus on the things of the Lord. And they would teach them to their children. We are called to do that same.
These have been words from the heart.
