Words from the Heart for Thursday October 3rd, 2019
The Lord has shown you what is good. He has told you what he requires of you. You must act with justice. You must love to show mercy. And you must be humble as you live in the sight of your God.
Micah 6:8 (NIRV)
Justice, Mercy, Humility
Most Canadians have no idea that if they are a victim of crime, they have a voice with the justice system through the Office of the Federal Ombudsman for Victims of Crime. A key part of the Ombudsman’s work is to advise the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada on what victims say they need and expect in relation to Canada’s federal laws, legislation, services and policies. It helps form new legislation to ensure victims get justice.
I was walking along a sidewalk recently and I saw a young man with a T-shirt that said: “Act Justly, Show Mercy. Walk Humbly with God.” As I walked by, I just said “Micah 6:8”. He laughed and stopped me and asked how I knew that. I told him it is one of the best verses in the Bible, because it is the heart of the call to God’s people. Micah 6:8 says “The Lord has shown you what is good. He has told you what he requires of you. You must act with justice. You must love to show mercy. And you must be humble as you live in the sight of your God.” This really is an encapsulation of the entire Law of God. The first two deal with our relationship with other people – we are act justly towards other and show mercy. These are the two sides of God’s nature – justice and mercy. The third has to do with our relationship with God, secured through faith in Jesus Christ – we are to walk humbly with Him. Jesus shortened these to just two – love God with your entire being and love others as yourself. These are the foundational principles of the Word of God.
These have been words from the heart.
