Words from the Heart for Thursday October 18th, 2018

You might say to yourself, “My power and my strong hands have made me rich.” But remember the Lord your God. He gives you the ability to produce wealth.

Deuteronomy 8:17-18 (NIRV)

He Gives You the Ability

Many times sinful man boasts that he does not need the Lord. He says that he can make it on his own. The Lord in mercy and grace reminds us that we are not made to live without relying on God. It is He who gives us the ability to produce wealth and succeed. Thank Him for that truth. There’s also a promise in those words that He will help us.

Canadians are speaking more languages, and bilingualism appears alive and well. Data from the 2016 census shows that linguistic diversity is on the rise, with 7.6 million Canadians able to speak a language other than French or English. That’s up almost 1 million, or 14.5 per cent, over 2011. And the proportion of Canadians who speak more than one language at home rose to 19.4 per cent in 2016, up from 17.5 per cent in 2011, according to the latest round of census information released by Statistics Canada.

Here in the modern Western world we are taught from a young age to be independent. We are told to stand on our own two feet, to look out for number one, to do things our way. When we face challenges, we are told to pull up our socks and get things done. This philosophy is perhaps best put by poet John Gay who said, “There is no dependence that can be sure but a dependence upon one’s self.” While this might be the philosophy at the heart of western culture, it is not what the Bible teaches. Deuteronomy 8:17-18 says this, “You might say to yourself, “My power and my strong hands have made me rich.” But remember the Lord your God. He gives you the ability to produce wealth.” All that we have in this world ultimately comes from our Creator. This is a message that we need to declare to our wealthy society. In our prosperity, we must never forget that we have what we have because of the abilities that God has given us. How can you express your gratitude to the Lord for all He has provided?

These have been words from the heart.
