If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and if you believe in your heart that God raised Jesus from death, then you will be saved.

Declare and Believe

When returning to Canada following international travel, if you do not declare, or falsely declare, goods, the Canada Border Service Agency can seize them. This means that you may lose the goods permanently or that you may have to pay a penalty to get them back. Depending on the type of goods and the circumstances involved, the Agency may impose a penalty that ranges from 25% to 80% of the value of the seized goods. The Customs Act provides border services officers with the authority to seize vehicles that were used to import goods unlawfully.

Many Canadians have had the experience of arriving home after traveling out of the country, and having to make a customs declaration about any purchases that were made while out of the country. This helps us understand what Paul means when he wrote in Romans 10:9, “If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and if you believe in your heart that God raised Jesus from death, then you will be saved.” The mark of a follower of Jesus is what they believe in their heart – that Jesus died and rose again – and what they confess, or declare with their lips – that Jesus is Lord. It was that declaration that got so many followers of Jesus in trouble in Paul’s day – it was Roman law that Caesar was lord and there was no room for disagreement on this. Declaring that Jesus is Lord was a radical statement. There are many places in our world today where declaring that Jesus is Lord will get you imprisoned – but our brothers and sisters still make that confession with boldness. Let us do so as well. Our salvation depends upon it.

These have been words from the heart.
