When he had led them out to the vicinity of Bethany, he lifted up his hands and blessed them. While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up into heaven.

Luke 24:50-51 (NIV)

Taken Up into Heaven

Jesus spent the forty days following His resurrection meeting with His followers and preparing them to receive the divine insights into His ongoing plans. They would be a vital part of those plans. When those days were completed He ascended to return to the glorious Presence of the Father. He left them with a promise to come again. He is faithful to His followers!

The Gatineau Hot Air Balloon Festival has rapidly become the most important hot air balloon gathering in Canada, and the fifth largest in the world. It is also the most popular summer festival in the Outaouais region. The Festival has attracted European and North American pilots to fly their regular and specially shaped balloons over the National Capital Region. It all began in 1988 and the first festival attracted 47 balloons, including one from France. It now draws close to a quarter of a million visitors.

When our grandchildren come to visit us, they often don’t want to leave. Not even to go home with their parents. So we jokingly tell them if they don’t leave, they won’t ever be able to come back. That usually gets them happily on their way, looking forward to their next visit. On the church calendar, today is Ascension Day. It celebrates what Luke 24:50-51 tells us: “When he had led them out to the vicinity of Bethany, he lifted up his hands and blessed them. While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up into heaven.” Jesus had promised that He would return, and in order for that to happen, He would first have to go home to Glory, where His Heavenly Father was waiting to have Him back where He belongs. It must have been bittersweet for His followers. They knew this day was coming, and He did promise them His abiding presence with the coming of the Holy Spirit in power on the Day of Pentecost. But they would miss Him in the flesh. For us, His ascension guarantees His soon return. Even so, come Lord Jesus.
