Wonderful Truths

In his 2009 book The Truth About Canada, Mel Hurtig makes some interesting and surprising observations. For example, we complain about taxes, but we rank 23rd among OECD countries. We rank 109th in voter turnout – not good. We rank 54th in number of physicians for 100,000 population. This statistics-based book ranges across all areas of our lives — including health, wages, productivity, culture, the media (“the most concentrated in the world”), and much else.

I will never forget speaking with a new follower of Jesus in SE Asia, who had come out of Buddhism to faith in Jesus Christ. He said that he always knew that there must be a Creator, but no one had been able to answer his questions about this until a Christian came to his village and shared the story of Jesus. In that story he was told about the God who had Created the world and who loved him deeply. This was a wonderful truth and it opened his spiritual eyes to see his need to invite Jesus to be his Saviour. King David prayed a similar prayer as my Asian friend. We read it in Psalm 119:18: “Open my eyes to see the wonderful truths in your instructions.” This is a great prayer. We should pray it every time we open God’s Word to read it. The Holy Spirit will always answer this prayer. One of the reasons I love reading the Bible is because every time I do, God reveals His truth to my mind and my heart. I’m sure you can testify similarly. God’s truth is wonderful, and it transforms the lives of all who pray earnestly to see what God is saying to us and to our world.

These have been words from the heart.
