Shrink Back

The Canadian economy tumbled over the summer of 2023 as export shipments waned and consumer spending flattened, signs of a continuing malaise as the country grappled with higher interest rates – and a sharp contrast with robust growth in the United States. Real gross domestic product, which is adjusted for inflation, shrank at an annualized pace of 1.1 per cent in the third quarter, according to figures published by Statistics Canada. The results were considerably weaker than the Bank of Canada’s estimate.

We all have times in our lives when we are tempted to stay in bed, pull the blanket over our heads, and avoid the challenges that come our way. We want to shrink back and hope that we don’t have to face what the day might bring. In spite of what the latest self-help guru will tell you, you don’t have what it takes to face the worst that life throws at you. The Bible points us to the source of true overcoming power. Hebrews 10:39 says, “But we do not belong to those who shrink back and are destroyed, but to those who have faith and are saved.” We have a God is who all powerful. We have a God whose power and authority never diminishes. In Jesus, He has come to unleash resurrection power in all who put their faith and trust in Him. For the Christian, there is no shrinking back from the challenges that come our way. We don’t belong to those who live in fear. Instead, we are among those who, with faith and trust in our great God, move forward empowered by his dynamic strength and authority, overcoming with eternity in view.

These have been words from the heart.
