I was young and now I am old,
yet I have never seen the righteous forsaken
or their children begging bread.

Psalm 37:25 NIV

A Lifetime

Canadians are a generally healthy people, and the country does not have any widespread problems with dangerous or infectious diseases. The average Canadian life expectancy is in the early 80s, for both genders. The leading cause of death for both sexes is cancer, followed by heart disease, which together represent about half of all natural deaths in Canada. Most of the other half die from a variety of other relatively common diseases and afflictions that tend to strike humans late in life.

Time is an interesting concept. When we are waiting for someone special to return home from a trip, it can drag on so slowly. When we are doing something exciting, it seems to fly by. The Bible speaks about the passing of time. In Psalm 37:25 we read, “I was young and now I am old, yet I have never seen the righteous forsaken or their children begging bread.” My mother-in-law grew up in Saskatchewan during the depression and the dust bowl of the 1930s and whenever this verse is mentioned, she testifies to the truth of it. People had so little, but what they had they shared and God worked through others to ensure that people had at least something. We don’t live in days as difficult as those but there are many today who are suffering from food deprivation. God calls us to be His hands and feet. If you have plenty, He calls you to share out of your abundance with those who have little. Life goes by so quickly – we need to stop clinging to things that have no eternal significance. Take time today to share with someone who is in need.

These have been words from the heart.
