Words from the Heart for Thursday June 25th, 2020
Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.
1 Corinthians 12:7 (NIV)
What is the common good of Canada and how does it fit with where we are as a nation? A 2012 survey revealed some interesting views. Canadians showed high support for gender equality, religious tolerance and the right to freely communicate their thoughts to their politicians. Nine in ten Canadians support publicly funded health care. There was support for bilingualism, environmental protection and social programs. There was less support for immigration, a strong military or a reduction in income inequality.
Winston Churchill once said that a nation will be judged by how they treat the least. Having traveled extensively, I have sadly been in some countries where there was little concern for the least fortunate, and where life in general has little value. This is the polar opposite from how the Kingdom of God functions. God provides for His people for the common good of all. At the beginning of His list of spiritual gifts, in 1 Corinthians 12:7 Paul the apostle writes this: “Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.” Jesus loved every one of His followers. So He has given gifts to each one, that when used with maturity will be a blessing to everyone else within the Christian family. There is no gift that is greater or lesser. Whatever gift God has given you is important. If you want your church to flourish, you need to put your gift, or gifts, into practice. And you need to encourage those who are a part of your church family to also use theirs for your good. Only then will the body of Christ flourish and your brothers and sisters flourish in their faith.
These have been words from the heart.
