Words from the Heart for Thursday July 8th, 2021
This is my command—be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.
Joshua 1:9 (NLT)
Strong and Courageous
Imagine being imprisoned and tortured for speaking out against your government – at just 16 years old. In 1979, Marina Nemat was arrested by the Iranian government for attending protests and writing articles about the new government’s oppressive policies. She spent more than two years in Evin prison, where she was tortured and very nearly executed. In 1991, Nemat emigrated to Canada and eventually decided to speak out about her experience. She has written two books and now regularly speaks at high schools, universities and conferences.
The people of Israel were concluding their 40 years of wandering in the wilderness, soon to cross into the Promised Land, Moses had passed and Joshua was stepping into his role as their leader. He was tasked with being both a military and governmental leader. He would need great wisdom and courage to do so. God knew this, so He gives Joshua this command in Joshua 1:9: “This is my command—be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” One of the consistent patterns in the Bible is that when God gives a command, He also gives a promise. We see that clearly here. Joshua is commanded to be strong and courageous. He is commanded to not be afraid or discouraged. God promises that He will be with Joshua wherever he goes. God gives us the same command and promise. We are to stand strong for Him in all that we do. We are to speak up on behalf of Jesus. And God has made the same promise to us – He will be with us to the end of the age. Trust Him in this.
