…to another [is given] prophecy…
1 Corinthians 12:10b (NIV)
The website smore.com has recently posted a prediction about the status of First Nation Canadians in 2050 and their prediction is positive. It says, “Currently 360,620 people live on Native American reserves in Canada. In 2050 there will be an increased population of Natives in Canada because of a substantially higher birth rate [than the general population]. Their death rate will also continue to decrease so they will basically be a stage three community in 2050 with a rapidly increasing population.
When we hear the word “prophecy” we usually think of a prediction about the future. But theologically, there is far more to the meaning of this word. Prophecy also includes the aspect of understanding the prophecies of the Hebrew Scriptures and preaching the Gospel. One theology professor of mine used to say that prophecy was both foretelling and forth telling. So it shouldn’t surprise us that when Paul teaches about the manifestation gifts from the Holy Spirit, he includes this in 1 Corinthians 12:10b: “…to another [is given] prophecy…” The modern prophet has a particular gift of understanding the times and speaking into them the Word of God for their generation. They are often not very popular because they tend to be straight shooters who see the world in black and white. God uses them to wake up His people and call them live according to His word and according to Kingdom principles. God desires that we would understand the day in which we live and to know how to impact it with the Gospel. Those with the gift of prophecy are given to help us.
These have been words from the heart.
