Words from the Heart for Thursday July 16th, 2020
…Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.
1 Corinthians 13:6-8a (NIV)
Love Never Fails
Peterborough-born Mike Fisher played in the NHL from 1999 until his retirement in 2018. He was a fan of country music star Carrie Underwood and in 2008 they met backstage after one of her concerts. On July 10, 2010, Fisher married Underwood at The Ritz-Carlton Lodge, Reynolds Plantation, in Greensboro, Georgia, with more than 250 people in attendance. Underwood surprised Fisher by having one of their favourite artists, Brandon Heath, sing his song “Love Never Fails” for their first dance.
I watched a video the other day on the shelf-life of the average major appliance you buy today. They are built to last about seven years, but many don’t get much past the first year of their existence. This is done on purpose, in order to force the owner to buy a new one every few years. Everything in this life fails. Well, not everything. There are some things that stand the test of time. 1 Corinthians 13:6-8a tells us “…Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.” In the original Greek used here by Luke, the word for love is agape. In the Bible it is only used to describe the love of God. You could say “God’s love never fails.” In what ways does it never fail? Paul answers that here – it never fails to protect, never fails to trust, never fails to hope, never fails to persevere. That makes it completely trustworthy. You see, the love of God is based on the nature of God, which is love. So, God’s love cannot fail because He cannot fail. We are called to love just like this.
