For the Lord takes delight in his people; he crowns the humble with victory. Let his faithful people rejoice in this honor and sing for joy on their beds.
Psalm 149:4-5 (NIV)
Delighting in His People
Different things delight different people. Flower enthusiasts, for example, were delighted back in 2017 when a corpse flower known as “Putrella” bloomed at Edmonton’s Muttart conservatory. The two-metre-tall plant produces an odour similar to rotting meat during the bloom, which lasted just 48 hours. Nearly 9,000 people visited when Putrella became the first corpse flower to bloom in western Canada four years earlier. In its native Indonesia, the corpse flower’s smell attracts carrion beetles, which become covered in pollen that they carry to nearby corpse flowers for reproduction.
God likes you. He really does. He likes the person He has made. He doesn’t always like what we do, but He loves to spend time with us and He loves when we reach out to Him in faith and live in relationship with Him. As Psalm 149:4-5 puts it, “For the Lord takes delight in his people; he crowns the humble with victory. Let his faithful people rejoice in this honor and sing for joy on their beds.” I love the thought of God taking delight in us. Our lives are far from perfect – we let the Lord down so often in thought, deed and word. But He loves us and amazingly He likes us. He takes delight in us, and when we come to Him in humility, even after we have let Him down, He crowns us with victory. Because of the assurance we have that the Lord delights in us, we are called to rejoice and sing songs of joy. What hope this brings to the human heart. In a world where far too many people feel unloved and lonely, we bring the assurance that God delights in His people and gives us the victory.
These have been words from the heart.
