Words from the Heart for Thursday January 2nd, 2020

…throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception. Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes. Put on your new nature, created to be like God—truly righteous and holy.

Ephesians 4:22-24 (NLT)

New Self

Canada got rid of her penny back in 2012, so the term “bright as a new penny” will not be understood by the youngest of Canadians. In spite of no longer making the penny, the Canadian Mint still produces coins in many other values, and also for many other countries. The Royal Winnipeg Mint produces coins for 60 different countries, including centavos for Cuba, kroner for Norway, and pesos for Colombia. Currently, the Mint can produce over 20 million coins a day.

Resolutions are a big deal at this time of the year. People want to make changes in their lives – habits they have, attitudes, desires. As good as those resolutions are, most of them only last a few days – a few weeks at most. In fact, it is only the second day of the New Year and some of you have failed in your resolutions already. Is real change possible at all? The answer is yes. When we come to trust in Jesus as Saviour and Lord, He makes us brand new – the old life is gone — new life awaits. But, the Bible teaches that trusting Jesus is just the beginning of the new life. The apostle Paul writes this in Ephesians 4:22-24: “You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.” The change that Jesus makes goes on and on for our entire lives, as we become more and more like Him.
