This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.

1 John 4:9-11 NIV

God Showed His Love

Many movies these days are filmed in Canada and show off our cities and beautiful vistas. Canadian actress Nia Vardalos didn’t have to look far for the perfect filming locations for her 2002 box office smash hit, My Big Fat Greek Wedding. Although set in Chicago, eagle-eyed film buffs will easily recognize Toronto’s charms peeking through the silver screen. The city’s Greektown along Danforth Avenue appears prominently throughout the movie, and if you watch carefully, you’ll also spot downtown’s Toronto Metropolitan University and Jarvis Collegiate Institute.

Human beings think we know so much about love. Since writing first began, human beings have written about it, sung about it, tried to explain it. How would you complete the statement “love is like …” Human beings need to feel love – without it, life has little meaning. The reality is we know so little about love, at least until we experience the true no-strings-attached love of God shown through the sacrificial death of Jesus on the cross. The apostle writes about it in 1 John 4:9-11: “This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.” It is God who is the source of all love. Human love is so fickle and selfish. God’s love is all-giving, completely other-focused. We don’t understand this kind of love until we have experienced it by faith in Jesus Christ.

These have been words from the heart.
