He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.

Micah 6:8 NIV

Love Mercy

When Australian photographer Louise Coghill went to Churchill Manitoba to take photos of the Northern Lights, she found herself at the mercy of nature. She writes “We walk onto the tundra despite the falling snow and heavy cloud cover. As an Australian … I have never experienced this kind of cold before. I’m still navigating the best glove and sock combination to ensure my extremities are comfortable. We finally concede to the weather and head back to town, tired and with empty memory cards.”

The day in which Jesus lived was filled with religious rules and regulations that kept people in bondage. Jesus often confronted the religious leaders about their hypocrisy – they forced the people to live by laws that they themselves failed to keep. Jesus simplified the will of God for His people into two commandments – love God with everything in us and love our neighbours as ourselves. This was actually nothing new. As far back as Micah 6:8 it was written: “He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” God still requires this of those who have become followers of Jesus. We are called to love mercy by acting justly towards others. As we love God, and have experienced His love for us through Jesus Christ, we are then to treat others as we have been treated – with grace and mercy. As you go into your day today, walk humbly with the Lord Jesus and as you do, He will give you plenty of opportunity to act with justice and mercy to those He brings your way.

These have been words from the heart.
