Lead a life of love, just as Christ did. He loved us. He gave himself up for us. He was a sweet-smelling offering and sacrifice to God.

Ephesians 5:2 (NLT)

A Life of Love

One in five Canadians are committing financial infidelity by keeping a secret around money or spending in their relationship, according to a new Cost of Love survey from Rates.ca. Three in ten Canadians are hiding purchases they make from their significant other. Almost one-third are concealing their poor credit score, 21 per cent have hidden cash, 14 per cent have hidden bank accounts, and 10 per cent have a secret line of credit or a long-term loan.

When we are in love, we express that love in so many ways, including being truthful and honest with the one we love. There is no place for selfishness and self-centredness in a loving relationship. We pour ourselves out for the one we love. That is certainly how Jesus expressed His love for us. He expects us to do that same for others. In Ephesians 5:2, the apostle Paul writes this: “Lead a life of love, just as Christ did. He loved us. He gave himself up for us. He was a sweet-smelling offering and sacrifice to God.” What a beautiful picture Paul paints here. Jesus lived a life of love. He expressed that love in so many ways throughout His life, reaching its fullness when He took the place we deserve on the Cross. We are called to give ourselves up for others as well. It seems to me there is a lot of selfishness in our world today, even from those who say they are followers of Jesus. We are called to put others ahead of ourselves, just as Jesus did. That ought to inform every decision we make – putting others above ourselves, our rights, our desires. How can you do that today?
