Words from the Heart for Thursday August 27th, 2020
God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the water in the seas, and let the birds increase on the earth.”
Genesis 1:22 (NIV)
Be Fruitful And Increase In Number
In the days before Youtube, newsreels were produced and shown in theatres and schoolrooms. Back in 1943 a newsreel was released called “Family Portrait – Canada’s Biggest Family. It included shots of the largest family in Canada, the L’heureux family, mom and dad and their seventeen children. It shows the dad and the boys getting ready to go out onto their farm and then working in the fields digging potatoes. Mom, meanwhile, with the girls are back in the kitchen bottling vegetables.
It’s never a good thing to run out of fish and birds. Both have happened in my lifetime. Canada had to shut down the cod fishery on the Grand Banks of Newfoundland because the cod supply was so depleted that it was unhealthy. Under Mao, all the sparrows were killed because he felt they were eating too much grain. It led to a famine in which 45 million people died. What a contrast to what God said to the creatures that live in the waters and the sky in Genesis 1:22: “God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the water in the seas, and let the birds increase on the earth.” God commanded the fish and the birds to fill the world. 71% of the world’s landmass is under water – and when things are healthy they are teaming with life. Same thing with the birds that fill the sky. God had a plan, not just for the creation of life on earth, but a much greater plan to fill the earth with living creatures, including us. Human beings, being the highest of His creation are called to do all we can to see all life on this planet flourish.
These have been words from the heart.
