Words from the Heart for Thursday August 12th, 2021
We love because God first loved us.
1 John 4:19 (ICB)
In a recent poll, 79 per cent of men and women believe true love lasts forever. However, women are more cautious about expressing that love. 63 per cent of women wait a few months to declare their love, but most guys – 49 per cent – will say “I love you” as soon as they feel it. 61 per cent of men and 53 per cent of women said they look for a partner who is also a true friend.
It is natural for human beings to love. God is love and the Bible tells us that we are created in His image, part of which is to love. Our love has been affected by our fallen nature, and so we often put boundaries to our love, or love only those who love us. How different is this from the love of God. It is only when we recognize that we have been loved unconditionally by God, who is perfect love, that we can learn how to love as we have been loved. The apostle put the truth this way in 1 John 4:19: “We love because God first loved us.” The word in Greek that John uses here is agape which is the unconditional, no strings attached kind of love that is only found in the love of God, and those who have experienced His love through faith in Jesus. We are called to love as He does. Far too often we fall short. We need to keep our heart in tune with, and our eyes focused on Jesus. We need to see others as He does. As we do, we will find ourselves loving them as He does.
These have been words from the heart.
