…the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints…
Ephesians 1:18 (NKJV)
A survey conducted last year by BMO InvestorLine found that 60 percent of Canadians expect to receive an inheritance in the future. Currently, the average Canadian inheritance is about $100,000, although British Columbians are already inheriting much more than that. The average inheritance in the province is over $120,000, higher than anywhere else in the country. Over the next two decades about $1 trillion is expected to be passed on from one generation to another in Canada, with the primary beneficiaries being Baby Boomers.
As the boomers get older and start to pass, we will be leaving behind what reports say is the largest inheritance in the history of the world. This may be so, as far as the human race is concerned. But the Bible speaks of other inheritances. It tells those of us who have been redeemed through faith in Jesus Christ that we are heirs of all that heaven promises. And in Ephesians 1:18 we read, “…the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints…” It is hard to believe that God has an inheritance, but that is what He tells us here. He who owns the entire universe calls us His inheritance. That is hard to get our minds around. God calls us the riches of that inheritance. Consider this – the entire Bible narrative is God’s desire and plan to draw us back to Him, and He rejoices over us. If you ever wondered how much God loves you, this explains it all. You are His inheritance – He went all the way to the Cross to make it so.
These have been words from the heart.
