Words from the Heart for Sunday October 20th, 2019
Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.
Matthew 28:19-20 (NIV)
The Great Commission
Canada is a member of the Commonwealth of Nations, which consists of countries that once belonged to the British Empire. The representative of Canada in those countries is not called an Ambassador, but a High Commissioner, and the building that houses the High Commissioner and staff are called High Commissions and not Embassies. The history goes back to the founding of Canada. At Confederation, Canada had special status with the UK as an independent nation, but still a significant part of the British Commonwealth.
Politicians are sometimes guilty of what is known as an unfunded mandate. They pass legislation implementing a new program or policy, but they don’t enact legislation to pay for it. So the bureaucrats that have to implement it have to scramble to find the funds within their budgets. God is never guilty of an unfunded mandate. When He gives a command, He gives a promise. Listen to this principle in the Great Commission in Matthew 28:19-20: “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Every Christian is aware of the command. What we sometimes miss is the promise that goes with it – and what a promise it is. Jesus assures us that as we go, in obedience to His call, He goes with us. With the assurance of His presence, we go forward with confidence and power. As you go today to wherever He has called you, remember that He goes with you.
These have been words from the heart.
