Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.

Colossians 4:2 NIV

Watchful and Thankful

According to the Canadian Cancer Society, part of the process of defeating cancer is what is called watchful waiting. According to their website, watchful waiting is “Treatment that watches for changes to symptoms of a slow-growing cancer. A person may be offered watchful waiting if they have other health problems or do not want to have other treatments right away. Tests are done if symptoms change or if the doctor wants to check whether the cancer has changed. When test results show that the cancer is getting worse, other treatments are offered.”

Humourist Will Rogers, who kept an entire nation laughing in his generation, once said “I don’t make jokes. I just watch the government and report the facts.” Will Rogers kept watchful in his day in order to entertain the people. The Bible tells us that the followers of Jesus are also to be watchful, but for an entirely different reason. Colossians 4:2 says “Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.” This is one of most interesting commands in the Bible. Followers of Jesus are called to commit themselves daily to three things. First, we are called to be people of prayer. Our conversation with God should take place throughout the day – it should be a normal part of our lives. Secondly, we are called to be watchful – to be aware of what is happening around us in this world. The first command is to focus on God, the second command is to focus on His work in the world. Both of these will lead to the reason for prayer and watchfulness – thanksgiving. We have so much for which to be thankful and we will be thankful as we remain prayerful and watchful.

These have been words from the heart.
