But I trust in your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in your salvation.

Rejoice

On March 27, 2022, Canadian soccer fans rejoiced upon seeing Canada’s men’s soccer team clinch a berth in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar after a 4-0 win over Jamaica. It was just the second time Canada’s men’s soccer team reached the World Cup in its history and the first time since 1986. “In a way, I’ve been waiting 36 years, but it’s been mostly the last 15-20 years when I’ve been watching it closely,” said Rob Nootenboom, who travelled from Regina to witness Canada’s clinching moment.”

We all have events in our lives that we look back on with fondness and joy. At the top of the list for me is my wedding day, many decades back now, when Wendy and I committed to a lifetime of marriage and building a family. The birth of our sons and now grandchildren are also remembered with joy, along with graduations and moves over the years. There is a song sung by the Imperials many years ago that speaks to such a day. It speaks about how life goes by and so many things fade from memory, and then it says, “only one memory stays new, the day I gave my life to You.” King David remembered such a day and writes in Psalm 13:5: “But I trust in your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in your salvation.” You may have become a follower of Christ many years ago, but one of the mysteries of our redemption is that it is forever new and fresh. As we grow in grace and the knowledge of the Lord Jesus, the reality and truth of our redemption never fades. Take time today to consider all the Jesus has provided and then rejoice.

These have been words from the heart.
