I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation… I can do all this through him who gives me strength.

According to a report in the Globe and Mail survey on contentment in Canada, sixty-seven per cent of Canadians report being very happy, generally speaking, and 68 per cent are very satisfied with their lives. Just 5 per cent of Canadians say they are very unhappy. The online survey by the Gandolph Group of nearly 2,500 adults looked at Canadians’ overall happiness and the level of satisfaction with specific aspects of their personal, family, social, work, and financial lives.

Finding contentment can be difficult. Life is often challenging – we face family crisis, financial challenges, the death of a loved one. When these happen to us, the usual response is far from contentment. What is far more normal is to at best tense up and at worst, fall apart completely. How then was the Apostle Paul able to write in Philippians 4:11b-13: “I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation… I can do all this through him who gives me strength.” Paul had reached the point where his contentment wasn’t based on anything in this life. Circumstances can change so quickly. What was the secret of being content in any and every situation that Paul learned? The answer is found in his final statement – “I can do all this through him who gives me strength.” Paul has learned that contentment had to be found in his relationship with Jesus Christ. No matter what the external circumstances of life, his inner life was completely focused on Christ. And in this was his contentment.
