Words from the Heart for Sunday November 24th, 2019
But for us, there is one God, the Father, by whom all things were created, and for whom we live. And there is one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things were created, and through whom we live.
1 Corinthians 8:6 (NLT)
For Whom and Through Whom
This past April the new Canadian $10 bill won the top prize in an international banknote competition. The bill, featuring Canadian civil rights activist Viola Desmond, beat 15 other banknotes to win the International Bank Note Society award. The Bank of Canada won the award over new currency issued by Switzerland, Norway, Russia and the Solomon Islands. Desmond became the first female Canadian to be featured prominently on a banknote.
The Bible is realistic in understanding the religious landscape of the world. There are a myriad of gods and lords, with some religions having thousands, perhaps millions of gods. But what the Bible does not do is give them all equal status. In fact, it teaches that there is only one true God and one true Lord. Paul makes this clear in 1 Corinthians 8:6: “But for us, there is one God, the Father, by whom all things were created, and for whom we live. And there is one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things were created, and through whom we live.” We see in this statement the triune God – both the Father and the Son created all things together. I love how it describes our relationship – we live for God the Father and we live through Jesus Christ. While He isn’t mentioned, all of this is possible only as the Holy Spirit takes up residence in us. If you are a follower of Christ, this is how you relate to God. Our desire must be to live for God, in the power of the Holy Spirit. As we do, the life of Jesus flows into us and through us to touch the world He loves.
These have been words from the heart.
