Words from the Heart for Sunday November 10th, 2019
Philip ran up to the chariot and heard the man reading Isaiah the prophet. “Do you understand what you are reading?” Philip asked. “How can I,” he said, “unless someone explains it to me?” So he invited Philip to come up and sit with him.
Acts 8:30-31 (NIV)
Each year, Canada’s Governor General attends special events, ceremonies and celebrations across the country. If you would like her to attend your event, you can invite her by writing her a letter. Don’t procrastinate, however – Her Excellency’s programs are planned five to six months in advance. All invitations are reviewed by a program officer, and then presented to Her Excellency. Decisions are made based on her availability, confirmed program of engagements, travel requirements and other factors.
If you travel to Ethiopia today, you will be able to visit ancient churches that were built centuries ago. Ethiopian Christians claim to have the oldest Christian churches outside of the Holy Land and trace their roots to the story of the Ethiopian eunuch that was reading the book of Isaiah when the Holy Spirit sent Philip to him. We read this in Acts 8:30-31: “Philip ran up to the chariot and heard the man reading Isaiah the prophet. “Do you understand what you are reading?” Philip asked. “How can I,” he said, “unless someone explains it to me?” So he invited Philip to come up and sit with him.” This is a radical example of how God prepares the heart of people before we even get to them with the Gospel. Maybe someone has shared the Gospel with them before, or they have listened to a Christian broadcast of some kind, or found something on line that interested them in the Gospel. Or maybe the Holy Spirit has just been prompting their heart to find Christ. However He has done this, like Philip we are called to obediently share Jesus with them, and watch as God draws them to Himself.
These have been words from the heart.
