Honour

In 1967, Canada’s centennial year, the Government of Canada established a system of national honours. The system was expanded in 1972 and subsequent years and continues to evolve. The Sovereign approves the creation of all honours and the Governor General confers them in her name. There are three categories of honours, Orders, Decorations and Medals. Decorations recognize various degrees of bravery, professionalism and exceptional devotion to duty, in three categories: military valour; civilian bravery; and meritorious service.

Happy Mother’s Day! Today the world calls us to the same command that God gave to His people way back on Mount Sinai – to honour our mothers, and fathers. Jesus confirmed this command when He taught His disciples in Mark 7:10: “For Moses said, ‘Honour your father and mother,’ and, ‘Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death.’” As usual, Jesus set the perfect example. Every time we see Him in relationship with His mother, He is honouring her. Whether it’s at a wedding in Cana, where He does what she asks of Him, or from the Cross, where He asks the apostle John to take care of Mary, Jesus honoured His mother. We are called to do the same in our attitude and actions. It is a blessing that our culture honours mothers enough to give them their own day. We who are followers of Jesus are called to honour our mothers every day. As they age, they will need more and more of our care and attention. Be sure to offer that to them. There are many ways you can honour your mother, today and every day. Take time today to think through how you can do that.
