Words from the Heart for Sunday May 31st, 2020

Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house … They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.

Acts 2:2-4 (NIV)

Filled with the Holy Spirit

Back in 2018, an Ultramar Gas Station in Prescott, Ontario got the diesel and gas pumps reversed and a number of customers filled their gas tanks with diesel. What do you do if that happens to you? Unless you happen to be a mechanic yourself, you should take your car in to a professional. Your gas tank and fuel lines will have to be drained and flushed. That will take a little bit of time, and a lot of cranking. Only then can the tank can be refilled with the right kind of fuel.

The final days of Jesus time on earth were a roller coaster to His followers. Even though He had tried to prepare them for all that would take place in those final days in Jerusalem, they didn’t understand. So, when He died, their hopes were dashed and with heads hung low they returned to their old lives. As low as those days were, the mountaintop came when they discovered the empty tomb and met the resurrected Lord Jesus. 40 days later they watched Him ascend to Glory, and once again He left them. But this time it was different. He had promised them the Holy Spirit, who would fill them with His abiding presence. And on the Day of Pentecost, He came, with power and authority. Acts 2:2-4 says, “Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house … They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.” He still fills His people.

These have been words from the heart.
