Words from the Heart for Sunday May 10th, 2020
Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.
Proverbs 31:30 (NIV)
The Woman Who Fears the Lord
In any list of awe-inspiring places to visit in Canada you will likely find the Hopewell Rocks. Every day, 100 billion tonnes of water empty out of the Bay of Fundy, allowing visitors the chance to walk along the ocean floor at New Brunswick’s Hopewell Rocks and admire bizarre rock formations like sculptures in a gallery. At high tide, the Atlantic’s water level rises by about 16 metres almost completely submerging everything again, except for the tips of some of the rocks.
Happy Mother’s Day! Moms play such a vital role in our lives, and not just when we are children. One of the first commands that God gives in the Bible is to honour our mothers, and so we do so today. King Solomon was arguably the wisest man ever to live, with the exception of Jesus, of course. He wrote this in Proverbs 31:30: “Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.” Centuries before Jesus came, Solomon teaches here one of the foundational principles of the kingdom of God – we are not to be caught up in temporal things. The world looks at charm and beauty. But these too easily and too quickly end. Although the world celebrates charm and beauty, followers of Jesus are called to honour the woman who walks with the Lord, and puts Him first in her life. I know many such women and they are a great blessing to the Christian Church. Their beauty is seen in their many acts of compassion and service. I have often seen Jesus in them and through them. And on Mother’s Day, I honour them.
These have been words from the heart.
