Words from the Heart for Sunday March 7th, 2021
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.
Matthew 5:6 (NIV)
Hunger and Thirst
Canada has 7% of the world’s renewable supply of freshwater. Freshwater export between Canada and the US currently takes place at a small scale, mostly as bottled water exports. The bottled water industry exports water in containers usually no larger than twenty litres. But even that can be controversial – the multinational food giant Nestle was accused of attempting to “drain” the town of Hillsburgh, Ontario, of its water in 2012 and 2013, during a drought.
I will never forget a conversation I had with someone I met in a South Sudanese refugee camp in Northern Uganda. We asked this woman where they got their food. She said “The United Nations comes and gives us a month’s worth of food. Then in two months they come back.” My heart was broken. This woman, who had lost her own children due to war, had adopted a dozen orphaned children in the refugee camp and somehow, she made a month’s worth of rations last twice as long. The hunger must have been gnawing. Jesus met people in His own day that would have suffered like that. It is that depth of hunger that I believe He was alluding to when He spoke of spiritual hunger in Matthew 5:6: “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.” When we reach the point of total spiritual emptiness, when we recognize our soul’s total emptiness, only then will we crave Jesus, the water of life, the One who promises to fill us to overflowing with the blessings of His Kingdom. Out of your spiritual emptiness do you long for Him, do you crave Him? When you do, you will be filled.
These have been words from the heart.
