They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting,
“Hosanna!”
“Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”
“Blessed is the king of Israel!”

John 12:13 NIV

Palm Branches

Spoiler alert, palm trees cannot grow unprotected outdoors in Canada except for a couple notable exceptions. These exceptions include zone 8 areas around Vancouver and Vancouver Island or if you have a “micro-climate” in your zone 6/7 yard. What about the rest of Canada? For 99% of the people here, you are located in zone 5, 6, or 7 and you CAN grow palm trees outdoors using special protection techniques known as “zone-pushing”. To be successful, you’ll need to select a cold-hardy palm which is rated for zone 7, 8, or even 9.

It’s Palm Sunday. It is the first day of Holy Week, a week when we will focus on all that led to Jesus’ trial, crucifixion and resurrection. It starts with joy and ends with joy, but much of what is in between is filled with passion and pathos. Weeks before Jesus’ entrance into Jerusalem, the Bible tells us that He set His heart resolutely towards Jerusalem. This had to be great resolve because Jesus knew what lay ahead. All that would take place as He approached Jerusalem had been planned well in advance – even before the creation of the world. Finally, He arrived at the Holy City and John 12:13 tells us “They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting, ‘Hosanna!’ ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!’ ‘Blessed is the king of Israel!’” The Redeemer was entering into Jerusalem. Five days later He would lay down His life to answer the prayer of their cry “Hosanna” which means ‘save us’ in Hebrew. If only they knew the salvation He would offer was the one needed most – reconciling them to their God.

These have been words from the heart.
