Words from the Heart for Sunday March 22nd, 2020
So Christ has truly set us free. Now make sure that you stay free, and don’t get tied up again in slavery to the law.
Galatians 5:1 (NLT)
In Canada, Parole is the program whereby offenders are permitted to be released from the correctional facility or penitentiary before the expiration of their sentence. Parole is a form of supervised release where their release is conditional on terms set by the Parole Board. Under Canadian legislation, the offender is ineligible for release anytime before the one-third mark of their sentence or 7 years, whichever is less. “Statutory release” refers to the eligibility for release of an offender at the two-thirds mark of their total sentence.
It is never a good thing to be enslaved to something. It might be alcohol or drugs or pornography. Or something not as harmful, like pursuits that control our time and energy but get in the way of more important matters. Even non-sinful pursuits can be enslaving if we allow them to. It is only through a relationship with Jesus Christ that we are set free to be the person we were created to be and to live a life that brings peace and joy in every activity and priority. The apostle Paul says this in Galatians 5:1: “So Christ has truly set us free. Now make sure that you stay free, and don’t get tied up again in slavery to the law.” Those who reject Christ often claim that the Gospel is restrictive and enslaving. In fact, just the opposite is true. Without Jesus, we are enslaved to our passions and pride. Only in Christ are we freed from the power of sin and empowered to live a life free from that and liberated to become the person that God created us to be. Are you truly free in Christ? Don’t get tied up in slavery again.
These have been words from the heart.
