Words from the Heart for Sunday March 10th, 2019
…You will become pregnant and have a son whose head is never to be touched by a razor because the boy is to be a Nazirite, dedicated to God from the womb. He will take the lead in delivering Israel from the hands of the Philistines.
Judges 13:5 (NIV)
In an essay he originally wrote for the Globe and Mail back in 2015, William MacDonald speaks about some things that set Canada apart. He writes: “Use words, not force. Make railways, not war. These overly simple ideas capture a national story – the Canadian one – that differs from those of most other countries. Canada’s story has increasingly been driven by persuasion. The American story has more often been shaped by war and violence. These differences in how to go about things and how to make a good society are huge.”
Before God allowed the Israelites to have human kings, He ruled the nation through judges. Some of these men and women, like Gideon, Deborah and Samson have become household names and we know their stories well. After times when the Israelites had moved away from God, the judges called the people of Israel back to the Lord. In the 13th chapter of Judges we read about an angel of the Lord appearing to the wife of a man named Zorah. Judges 13:5 says, “”…You will become pregnant and have a son whose head is never to be touched by a razor because the boy is to be a Nazirite, dedicated to God from the womb. He will take the lead in delivering Israel from the hands of the Philistines.” This is the prophecy about Samson, and he was born at a time when the Israelites had been under Philistine rule for 40 years. He was specifically called to deliver his people and to do so, he had to be set apart. Anyone who determines that they want to serve the Lord single heartedly must set themselves apart for God’s use alone.
These have been words from the heart.
