When you pass through the waters,
I will be with you;
and when you pass through the rivers,
they will not sweep over you.
When you walk through the fire,
you will not be burned;
the flames will not set you ablaze.

Isaiah 43:2 NIV

In an interview this past February, Royal Canadian Air Force retired Lieutenant-General Christopher Coates, citing everything from troop shortages to dwindling ammunition stocks to aging equipment and technology, said that a growing number of current and former defence officials are raising alarms about the state of the Canadian military. Even by its own estimates, only 61 per cent of the Canadian Armed Forces is considered ready for operations, according to the most recent data. In an increasingly volatile world, that’s serious cause for concern.

I don’t know what you are facing today, only those closest to you know that. I have lived long enough to know that it is possible you are facing some of the most difficult times you have ever faced. What’s causing it? Maybe a medical situation, or a wayward child, financial challenges or the death of a loved one. It’s easy to sense God’s presence when things are going well – His presence surrounds you and you walk with a skip in your step. It’s easy in those times to believe that God is there with you. It isn’t nearly so easy on these tough days. But listen to His promise, just for you, today, from Isaiah 43:2: “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.” If today is, “one of those days,” do this – write out this verse on a post-it note or in your memory. You may not feel God’s presence, but He is protecting you today.

These have been words from the heart.
