When Jesus was healing people, providing for their needs, there were huge crowds that followed Him. Then He started to talk about taking up their cross daily in order to follow Him and by the time He did that, at Calvary, there were just a handful of people there to witness it. Paul the apostle understood the need for followers of Jesus to be fully committed to the Lord. He writes this in 1 Thessalonians 4:2: “For you know what instructions we gave you by the authority of the Lord Jesus.” Paul here gently gives a powerful reminder that the Christian life isn’t a casual suggestion; it’s a calling guided by the Lord Himself. God doesn’t leave us on our own to figure out what it means to be a follower of Jesus. He gives us clear instructions through His Word, through His Spirit, and through the community of believers. We need to regularly take time to consider our own hearts – am I taking Jesus’ teaching seriously and living as a true disciple? We need to remember that the instructions Jesus gives are for our good and for His glory.
