Words from the Heart for Sunday June 14th, 2020
God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another.
1 Peter 4:10 (NLT)
Serve One Another
The Vietnam War is considered a US war, and officially it was. So, it might surprise you to know that while Canada didn’t send troops to Vietnam, many Canadians joined the US Army to serve in Vietnam. Privately, some Canadians contributed to the war effort. Canadian corporations sold war material to the Americans. In addition, at least 30,000 Canadians volunteered to serve in the American armed forces during the war. At least 134 Canadians died or were reported missing in Vietnam.
The Bible tells us that God gives gifts to his people. The greatest gift is the gift of eternal life that is offered by Jesus’ death on the Cross. That is where our spiritual life begins. But God has so many other gifts to give to his people. There are three different words for gifts in Greek. The Bible lists them in different places. Romans 12 lists the motivational gifts. 1 Corinthians 12 lists manifestation gifts and Ephesians 4 lists the gift of people for the Body of Christ. Whatever the gift or gifts that God has given you, they are all given for a purpose. 1 Peter 4:10 tells us “God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another.” The gifts are given not for our own good, but so that we can serve others within the family of God. We are called to discover our gifts and then learn how to use them for the good of others in the family of God. Those you sit next to in church need you to use your gifts for their good and they need to use theirs for your good. That’s God’s plan.
