Words from the Heart for Sunday July 26th, 2020
…throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception. Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes. Put on your new nature, created to be like God—truly righteous and holy.
Ephesians 4:22-24 (NLT)
In the early days of COVID-19, some Canadian flower farmers grappled with the unimaginable: throwing heaps of flowers and months of work away as restrictions lead to an unprecedented drop in sales at a time when business should be booming. After non-essential businesses were closed across Canada in March due to the pandemic, adjustments to allow garden centres to open were made in Alberta, BC, Manitoba and Quebec – but in the rest of Canada the flower business struggled. Farmers sold just 30 percent of their main spring crop.
I was watching a marathon recently, and the morning started cool. So at the beginning the runners had running jackets on. As the day warmed up, they threw their jackets off so they could run in their t-shirts. The jackets would only slow them down as they ran. The Christian life is referred to in the Bible as a race. And in the same spirit as a marathon, Paul writes this in Ephesians 4:22-24: “…throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception. Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes. Put on your new nature, created to be like God—truly righteous and holy.” To run the Christian race, we must put off everything from our old nature – the sin, the anger, the self-centeredness. All of this only gets in the way of being the man or woman that God has called us to become. Instead, we are called to clothe ourselves in the fresh new spiritual clothes provided by the Holy Spirit. Then, clothed with the new nature, we will run the race set before us with righteousness and holiness.
These have been words from the heart.
