Words from the Heart for Sunday July 21st, 2019
I have seen the burden God has laid on the human race. He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end.
Ecclesiastes 3:10-11 (NIV)
Eternity in the Human Heart
We don’t usually think of snow shovels in the middle of the summer, but I recently read an article that was entitled “the eternal search for the perfect snow shovel.” The author, Don Pitts, wrote that he had 8 snow shovels in his garage and none of them were perfect. He writes, “A wide red one with a curved blade has great coverage if the snow isn’t too heavy, but it seems some always dribbles off the outside edges. The all-plastic one has side edges to prevent dribbling and a bent ergonomic handle but it began to develop a big bite out of the front from scraping along the sidewalk.”
No other part of God’s creation is aware of the eternal. No animal sits on a grassy hillside on a warm starry night, gazing up longingly into the eternity of space. Nothing else in all creation sets up a rock on a ledge and worships it, innately longing for a relationship with their creator. When God created men and women in His image, eternity was set in the human heart. Ecclesiastes 3:10-11 describes it beautifully, “I have seen the burden God has laid on the human race. He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end.” God has put a burden on us – a longing for things eternal. The promise is that He has also put into place everything necessary to have that burden lifted – He will make everything beautiful in its time. God has birthed that longing in your heart for eternity – and He has sent His own son Jesus Christ to meet that longing in your heart. Reach out in faith to Him today.
