The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer;
my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge,
my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.
Psalm 18:2 NIV
Stronghold
In the 18th century, Louisbourg was a fortified town and an important strategic capital in the French colony of Île Royale (Cape Breton Island). It was the scene of two major military sieges in the Anglo-French wars for supremacy in North America. The fall of the Louisbourg stronghold to the British in 1758 paved the way for the capture of Québec and the end of French rule in North America. Today, Louisbourg is a national historic site and a popular tourist destination in Cape Breton.

Usually, at this time of the year, a good old snowball fight is the last thing on our minds. As we spend time enjoying sunny beaches and wearing shorts, our mind doesn’t usually go to snow. But I want to take you there for a minute. In a snowball fight, the secret is to find a good stronghold so you can’t get smacked by a snowball. So, we build a fort or find a tree. We all innately know about the need for a stronghold in our lives, when the tough times come. Sometimes our stronghold is a spouse, or friend, that we know will stand with us when the toughest times come. But the best stronghold in life, and eternity, is found in Psalm 18:2: “The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.” What makes the Lord Jesus the perfect stronghold is that He is always available, and He is all-powerful. When the difficulties come, turn to Him. When you are feeling overwhelmed, turn to Him. Let Him be your stronghold.
These have been words from the heart.
