Words from the Heart for Sunday January 19th, 2020
For I command you today to love the Lord your God, to walk in obedience to him, and to keep his commands, decrees and laws; then you will live and increase, and the Lord your God will bless you in the land you are entering to possess.
Deuteronomy 30:16 (NIV)
Love and Obey
Police-reported crime in Canada increased for the third consecutive year in 2017. In 2017, the national Crime Severity Index increased 2% from 2016 to 2017, but the index was 24% lower than a decade earlier in 2007. The change in 2017 was the result of increases in police-reported rates of numerous offences, most notably sexual assault, possession of stolen property, motor vehicle theft, and homicide. A 2% decline in the rate of breaking and entering mitigated the impact of these increases.
Some people read the Ten Commandments and see them as inhibiting: God trying to keep us in bondage and under control. In fact, God has given us these Commandments to help us live lives that avoid guilt and shame. God loves us and His desire is for us to be able to walk in freedom and joy. How do we know this? Because He tells us. In Deuteronomy 30:16, God gives a command, and promise: “For I command you today to love the Lord your God, to walk in obedience to him, and to keep his commands, decrees and laws; then you will live and increase, and the Lord your God will bless you in the land you are entering to possess.” This is a wonderful promise. As we live according to His precepts and laws, life will go well with us. We will experience the blessing of God in ways we can’t even begin to imagine. On this side of Jesus’ death and resurrection, we have the Holy Spirit who fills our lives and gives us all we need to walk in obedience. When we love the Lord Jesus, that will be our daily goal.
These have been words from the heart.
