In 2022, a documentary movie was produced called Steadfast: The Jean Augustine Story. The movie tells the incredible story of Jean Augustine’s journey from Happy Hill, Grenada to being the first Black woman elected to Canada’s House of Commons and the first Black woman to serve in Canada’s federal Cabinet. She served with distinction in Canada’s Parliament, winning four consecutive elections as the member of parliament for Etobicoke-Lakeshore in Toronto until she decided to move on to new challenges in 2006. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt19389270
There are verses in the Bible that each of us find particularly impactful and memorable. One of those verses for me is Luke 9:51. Jesus was born for a singular purpose – he had come to die as a sacrifice in our place, so that the stain of sin could be removed and a personal relationship with our Creator made possible. He lived His entire life under the shadow of a Roman cross, knowing that one day he would die an excruciating death. It would take the grace of God for Him to remain faithful to His calling, and a heart set on fulfilling His role as Saviour. Luke 9:51 tells us that at just the right time in His life and ministry, He knew His time on earth was drawing to a close. We read: “As the time approached for him to be taken up to heaven, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem.” It is likely that few of us, if any, are going to suffer a painful death because of faithfulness to God’s call on our lives. But all of us who are followers of Jesus are called to be just as steadfast as Jesus as we fulfill His will for our lives.
These have been words from the heart.
