Words from the Heart for Sunday February 9th, 2020
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
John 3:16 (NIV)
The One Verse
Canada and the USA have the longest border in the world. The entire border is marked by a clear cut path 3 meters on either side of the border. Marker #1 of the 8891 kilometer border is found where the border meets the Beaufort Sea between Alaska, USA and Yukon, Canada. Until a year ago, Marker 1 was sinking into the sea and the one man who could be called upon to repair it, Senior Surveyor Joe Harrietha, went to work.
The Bible has 31,102 verses in 1,189 chapters. There are a few verses that people particularly love and that most Christians have memorized. The 23rd Psalm, for example, or the verses in Romans that can be used to share the Gospel. But there is one verse that stands above all others, the verse that every child who grows up in Sunday School memorizes early: John 3:16. It says “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” When I was young, my teacher told me that this was the Gospel in a nutshell. All that the Bible teaches from Genesis to Revelation, God’s incredible plan of salvation, is in this verse. For God so loved. This is where it starts. His love covers the world – there will be people from every tribe, nation and tribe in God’s Kingdom. And out of that love, He gave. Our God is the great giver – of the only One who can save us – His only Son. And we receive that gift simply by faith – that whoever believes in Him has eternal life. Do you believe?
