Words from the Heart for Sunday December 9th, 2018

In the sixth month after Elizabeth had become pregnant, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee. He was sent to a virgin. The girl was engaged to a man named Joseph. He came from the family line of David. The virgin’s name was Mary.

Luke 1:26-27 (NIRV)

From the Family Line of David

The messenger angel Gabriel had yet another message to deliver. This time it was for a young teenage girl. The prophecy was that the Saviour would be born of a virgin. The angel’s announcement would require supernatural activity of God to prove true. God who sent the message is a supernatural God.

2006 was quite the year for two “sons of Canada.” That was the year that Justin Morneau, from New Westminster BC, a first baseman for the Minnesota Twins, was named the American League’s MVP. That same year another BC athlete, Steve Nash from Victoria, was playing basketball for the Phoenix Suns. For the second year in a row, he was selected as the National Basketball Association’s Most Valuable Player. That makes a good year for British Columbia and Canada.

One of the things you will notice as you read the Scriptures is how often lineages are mentioned in the Bible. This is so throughout the Hebrew Scriptures, and both Matthew and Luke include a very clear lineage for Jesus. It was important because God had made covenants and promises over the centuries, and He did so through specific families. As He fulfilled His promises to those families, they are recorded in Scripture. Over and over again, God’s faithfulness in keeping His promises is recorded. This is what Luke says about this in Luke 1:26-27: “In the sixth month after Elizabeth had become pregnant, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee. He was sent to a virgin. The girl was engaged to a man named Joseph. He came from the family line of David. The virgin’s name was Mary.” God had promised that David’s throne would have no end. From a human perspective it did come to an end. But not in God’s Kingdom. Through His human stepfather Joseph, Jesus is a direct descendent of David – just as He promised. How has God kept His promises in your life?

These have been words from the heart.
