Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion! Shout, Daughter Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
Zechariah 9:9 NIV
The King Will Come
Although no date has been announced for King Charles’ first trip to Canada since his coronation, back in May 2022 it was suspected that the new king may choose Canada for his first overseas visit as monarch. The Times claimed Canada would be ‘top of the list’ in the King’s priorities, as it aligns with the monarch’s desire to visit a Commonwealth country first. It would also match the government’s diplomatic priorities, as the UK is looking to foster closer ties with Ottawa after Brexit.
The nations around Israel, back in the days of the Hebrew Scriptures, all had a king. Israel wanted one too – they wanted to be just like everybody else. That was never God’s best for Israel. His plan was to provide a King, alright, but not just any king. He had one that He promised for millennia would come. He called the people of Israel to be patient, but they would not. So, God acquiesced and gave them a king—a number of them, actually—over the centuries. It didn’t always go well for God’s people. Their kings often led them away from their God. But God hadn’t given up on His plan—He had a King chosen, and in Zechariah 9:9 He says this: “Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion! Shout, Daughter Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.” This prophecy would be fulfilled exactly on the day Jesus rode into Jerusalem on that donkey—we call that day Palm Sunday. But the point is this: a King was coming. Today is the first day of Advent. Jesus the King is on His way.
These have been words from the heart.
